Weivi´s release: Joensuu, Finland – November 17, 2025
Growing demand for environmentally friendly rail transport has driven the need for both passenger and freight services, as well as advanced railway traffic optimisation solutions. In Europe, digitalisation and standardisation projects aim to increase railway capacity by 40% using existing infrastructure, and this goal cannot be achieved without efficient traffic optimisation. To explore this potential, Weivi examined in a pilot project with Fintraffic how its real-time optimisation engine could enhance railway traffic management.
The pilot was conducted in a simulated test environment, in which Weivi’s advanced real-time optimisation engine was evaluated on the Joensuu–Imatra railway line. The system’s performance was assessed through tests carried out by the customer’s domain experts, rather than through live operational use. The results demonstrated the engine’s potential to improve train operations by making them faster, smoother, and more reliable—even under severe disruption scenarios.
During the pilot, Weivi’s software RAWEN coordinated train traffic, optimised track positions, assigned priorities, and minimised idle time whenever the user provided new data for the system. The system reduced delays, increased track capacity, and improved punctuality, helping operators save both time and resources. RAWEN also generated optimised disruption recovery plans for extreme scenarios that, in real operations, could have led to multiple train cancellations. By optimising train traffic in real time, RAWEN enables more trains to run safely and efficiently across the network.
“In the simulation environment, the system constructed quickly new plans when different kinds of traffic disruptions were tried out. By managing traffic according to these plans, the effects of disruptions could be reduced for trains in actual scenarios, as the system can support the traffic controller’s decision making with an optimal solution based on the current situation,” commented Teemu Sirkiä, Product Manager at Fintraffic.
“Scientific computing methods provide reliable and sufficiently fast solutions for real-time traffic management. The realisation of this pilot in a simulation environment shows that our technology delivers the promised results,” added Alia Dannenberg, CEO of Weivi Oy. “The next natural step is testing in a real traffic control environment, and this pilot project gave us valuable information on how to implement it successfully.”
Completed in June 2025, the pilot project was an important step towards the modernisation of Finland’s rail network. The pilot project demonstrated that rapid optimisation of rail traffic is possible, making the EU’s green development goals to increase environmentally friendly and reliable rail transport more achievable than ever.
